Jazz Club Trumpets Return
JAZZ evenings at the Thistle Hotel on Manor Place are set
to return after an absence of ten months.
The popular weekly events stopped after the death of organiser
Toto McNaughton.
Now drummer Ron Matthews has stepped into his role.
The evenings, featuring Sandra Stone and an all-star trio,
will run every Saturday in August from 9pm to midnight.

Talented Toto
Ta, ta, Toto! The passing of
Tommy "Toto" McNaughton evokes
anecdotes aplenty from the Edinburgh musicians who played
alongside him, among them
Tam White, a close pal for
40 years.
"Toto was one of the funniest guys I've known. Naturally funny.
He'd have found work professionally as a comedian had he chosen
that as a career. Or as a jazz singer or dancer or footballer.
His goalkeeping skills got him a trial with several clubs,
among them Falkirk.
"Above all he was a talented drummer and I recall a gig in
West Lothian when, in the middle of a drum solo, he stormed
from the stand, came back brandishing two billiard cues and
used them to continue his solo. Truly a character." |

Fond Farewell
Gone but not forgotten. Two stalwarts of Edinburgh's jazz
scene who died within weeks of each other in the autumn, saxophonist
Jimmy Wood and vocalist Jimmy Gilmour, will have their lives
in music commemorated on Thursday in the Thistle Hotel, Manor
Place, 9pm till midnight.
Pianist Jack Finlay and drummer Kevin Dorrian have organised
the event.
Says Kevin: "They had the respect of the jazz fraternity for
a long time and we'll recreate some of their legendary West
End resident gigs at Ryan's and Harry's bars.
We're calling it 'Jazz Remembers the Two Jimmies". |
