The Edinburgh Festival
Fringe (commonly known as The Fringe) started
in 1947 when 8 theatre groups turned up uninvited
to the first Edinburgh International Festival
(EIF). Over the years, more performers came to
Edinburgh to perform on the outskirts of the EIF
and by 1958 the Festival Fringe Society was formed
to provide information, a central box office and
a published programme of all the Fringe shows.
Central to the society's constitution was the
policy that there should be no artistic vetting
from the society. Which still holds true to this
very day.
It's the biggest arts festival in the world, with
something for everyone: theatre, comedy, music,
dance, exhibitions and much, much more. In fact,
it's the number-one tourist attraction in the
whole of Britain. |

| "What makes a memorable
jazz and blues festival? Is it the sight of apparently
respectable middle-aged men dancing themselves
to a frenzy as Jack Bruce’s latest power trio
thunders through Sunshine of Your Love? Is it
the sound of a 79-year-old saxophone player, who
long ago left home to make his name in the States,
back leading a starry big band through Duke Ellington?
If he wasn’t a miner’s son from Lochgelly who
supports Cowdenbeath FC, you’d swear that Joe
Temperley was misty-eyed. Or maybe it’s just the
spectacle of a New Orleans jazz parade given a
Scottish twist, a blur of noise and colour, winding
its way to the Grassmarket". The Times 2009 |

2010 |
| |
|
|
|
The Open Championship
will be held on the Old Course, St Andrews from
Thursday 15th to Sunday 18th July 2010.
The Open Championship, or simply The Open (often
referred to as the British Open outside the UK),
is the oldest of the four major championships
in professional golf.
It was first played on 17 October, 1860 at Prestwick
Golf Club, in Ayrshire, Scotland.
The World's greatest golfers will battle for the
famous Claret Jug, which replaced the Challenge
Belt and has been awarded to the winner since
1873.
It will see the famous 17th "Road Hole", possibly
the most famous hole in golf, lengthened for the
first time in over 100 years.
Tiger Woods won the trophy at the St Andrews Open
in 2000 and 2005. |
