| Edinburgh Festival Fringe |
03 Aug - 27 Aug / 2012 |
|
|
|
|
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (commonly
known as The Fringe) started in 1947 when 8 theatre groups turned up uninvited
to the first Edinburgh International Festival (EIF). Over the years, more
performers came to Edinburgh to perform on the outskirts of the EIF and by 1958
the Festival Fringe Society was formed to provide information, a central box
office and a published programme of all the Fringe shows. Central to the
society's constitution was the policy that there should be no artistic vetting
from the society. Which still holds true to this very day.
It's the biggest arts festival in the world, with something for everyone:
theatre, comedy, music, dance, exhibitions and much, much more. In fact, it's
the number-one tourist attraction in the whole of Britain. |

| Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival |
20 Jul - 29 Jul / 2012 |
|
|
|
|
| "What makes a memorable
jazz and blues festival? Is it the sight of apparently respectable middle-aged
men dancing themselves to a frenzy as Jack Bruce’s latest power trio thunders
through Sunshine of Your Love? Is it the sound of a 79-year-old saxophone
player, who long ago left home to make his name in the States, back leading a
starry big band through Duke Ellington? If he wasn’t a miner’s son from
Lochgelly who supports Cowdenbeath FC, you’d swear that Joe Temperley was
misty-eyed. Or maybe it’s just the spectacle of a New Orleans jazz parade given
a Scottish twist, a blur of noise and colour, winding its way to the Grassmarket".

Scottish Open Golf Championship |
|
|
|
|
It comes at a great relief
that the Scottish Golf Open held for the first time on the
lovely shores of the Moray Firth near Inverness in 2011, is set to host the
event again this year.
Fears were raised because of very bad weather conditions that caused course
landslides after very heavy thunderstorms reduced the competition to just 54
holes instead of the scheduled 72.
The golf course was co-designed by Managing Partner Mark Parsinen, who was also responsible for the
design of Kingsbarns in Fife and American golf course architect Gil Hanse.
The
course was voted as Best New Course for 2009 by Golf Magazine USA while Ron
Whitten, writing in the December 2010 issue of Golf Digest USA, stated that
"Castle Stuart might be the most perfectly conceived and executed design ever
built". |
